Going green means getting noticed. The International Car of the Year Awards will add the the EARTH, WIND & POWER Awards to the ballot, honoring the most environmentally-friendly Car and Truck of the Year in early January during the North American International Auto Show.

To be eligible, vehicles must use a power source that contributes to the reduction of global warming, promotes a cleaner environment and boosts the initiative to achieve energy independence through alternative sources of fuel. The candidates will be named in November from a pool of vehicles that rely on a variety of power sources including hybrids, electric, flex-fuel and ethanol.

ICOTY producer Courtney Caldwell, and Edmunds.com editorial director, Kevin Smith, will host the 2009 production at the MGM Grand in Detroit. “With global warming and concerns about dependence of foreign oil becoming more mainstream today, more and more people are turning to fuel-efficient or alternative fuel vehicles,” Caldwell, ICOTY said. “It’s become of vital interest to consumers, automakers, and the future of our planet to produce vehicles that are compatible with our environment, which is why Congress recently approved $25 billion for automakers to develop eco-friendly, fuel efficient vehicles.” That’s a green badge of honor.
