The fetching tiles of STUDIUM are mesmerizing. Each inlaid pattern parsed together in symmetrical form in the David Hicks Stone Collection designed by Ashley Hicks. It was this entrance at the showroom on 58th St that I was introduced to Ashley and the book he wrote about his father interior design icon David Hicks.
The cover speaks for itself: Hicks with ever-present smoking cigarette in hand, proudly posing in one of his design hubs. Hicks formalized a design philosophy I prescribe to: interjecting more than one style into home design, parsed from his travels and worldly observation of the world. From somewhat humble beginnings he found his way to design, working for J. Walter Thompson for a time being (home to many an auto account.) His prowess for crafting took him to the great rooms of the world: Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, Aeroflot and the St. Regis hotel suites in New York.
