Live from the Equinox in Manchester, Vermont, I’ve arrived in an 2010 LR4 chariot, complete with splashy new refinement. I’ve just heard about this video that’s all the craze in the UK as a 5.0-liter Supercharged Range Rover Sport goes head to head with a 4.2-liter Supercharged RR to 100mph then back to 0. My Range Rover experiences are more central to the woods, the jungle and the open terrain, but I wouldn’t mind doing this 0 to 100 mph test on asphalt either.

Ford Mustang man, 24-year-old Daniel Verlarde, longed for pony logo tattoo. What’s distinct about his high marks is that they were facilitated by Ford’s 10 Unleashed campaign, awarding 10 people an experience of choice. High Voltage Tattoo in LA did the work on Verlade. He customized his 2010 Ford Mustang, adding a whole level of individual to his modifications. Luis Lopez at M&M Autopart handled the (auto) body work. Skin tight.

Before Lee Iacocca was attributed with saving Chrysler, he was blue blooded, or at least Ford Blue.  Iacocca is sometimes referred to as the Mustang patriarch, credited as such after the pony car debuted on April 17, 1964.

More recently, Iacocca decided to revisit a more pleasing aspect of automotive history with the special-edition car. He collaborated with designer Michael Leone and Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters to create the Iacocca branded Ford.

“All the talk about bankruptcy and bailouts — the mood is so gloomy on cars,” Iacocca told the USA Today.  84 and long retired from running Ford Motor and later Chrysler, said in a phone interview from his Los Angeles home.

Here’s a glimpse of the Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Ford Mustang — one out of 45 cars built. Notice the fastback curves implemented on the 2009 body style. Production is no small feat, requiring 3500 hours of crafting, developed over two years. The Iaccoca namesake was unveiled in California in July.Racing cues — like an option 400 hp supercharged engine, racing brake package and a 5 speed manual transmission—  add to the fun of it. Admirers of Iacocca will fancy the I-stitching, badging and door sill plates.

Check out the lovelies as the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance hit the home stretch in downtown Carmel, kicking off our pre-Pebble weekend activities. We caught it from the streetside vantage point where we strolled amongst car collectors and the general public, in what was the most crowd-friendly of the Pebble Beach hub bub. Of course, parking on these streets prove a more exclusive activity, but the cars made it worth it the congestion. Name that hood ornament — we saw Packard, Bugatti, Bentley, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, Delage, Duisenberg and Porsche among the flock of rare gems. It’s one thing to gaze upon a classic, but to see a pre-1950 authentic rolling down the street is another entirely. The phrase “Keeping up with the Jones’s” was illuminated by this kind of fanfare, no doubt. More rare gems after the jump.

A Jeep Commander on the Lodge Freeway was the perfect setting for fresh music reviews on a crisp July evening. Inside the cozy, tawny-colored cabin was a track bonanza of Dudley Perkins and his beat offerings, the 500 Days of Summer soundtrack (loving the Hall & Oates and Smiths throwbacks), the cheeky band the Verbs and more. Commander’s sophisticated electronics have been slept on – UConnect is self explanatory and easy to use — the hallmark of practical technology, and audio was clear and balanced. It was helpful to navigate easily between NAV and tracklistings. I was never lost, on the streets or on song titles.

On the outside looking in, Commander’s exterior design grabbed one area family that fell in love with the subtle vintage cues in the angular design, and the fold-down third row of seats. Commander manages to leave enough glass intact despite the hard edges, making for a pleasant and safe outlook on the streets. This design has road life; we hope it gets the opportunity to live up the challenge.

Stay tuned for critical notes on the tunes and tuning.

We spoke with BMW Vice President Jack Pitney about his car preferences:”It would be a convertible, a manual transmission. The world needs a bit more joy right now. It would be a more avante garde color and a leather interior package. In a convertible all of your worries are blowing out into the air; it’s liberating, really. And manual; there’s artistry in driving a car and driving it well.”

Pitney spoke to the climate of car buying in these times. “You try not to let the outside world affect you, but that doesn’t mean you operate in splendid isolation.”

And to sum up BMW’s mantra: “What we stand for is bringing the joy of driving to life.” He uses Project I as a an example, of designers and engineers imagining the future with zero emissions. “We think of zero emissions as not fun, but these guys have a whole new business model.”

He spoke about American’s perceptions of diesel, but counters with the twin-turbo engine’s lean ways and performance prowess.
“We’re all using different ways to get to the same way to answer the question.” He says longterm is battery electric vehicles.

And on the topic of BMW art cars, which had just finished their Manhattan pit stop on exhibition in Grand Central Station, Pitney took extreme pride, recalling past New York showings of the BMW tradition. “It has reminded us in our belief in the arts and design. It’s a differentiator.” He has something lined up for next year that he alluded to in the art car world, an escape from the current discussion of woes. More on that conversation to come, but we’ll leave you with this point of BMW philosophy, “Design is part of who we are. We’re a company driven by our engineering department. We always protect car development process and the design development.”

Our resident artist/ sous-chef takes lanky Lexus to the streets and comes up for air.

If there is one thing that you may notice when steppin’ up to the front mug of the new 2010 Lexus RX450h, it is the super sloped wind cutting nose resembling the leading edge of a Hammerhead shark. You can peek the bottom valance panel as well as the hood line all while standing directly in front. For a prototype, it sure has fine, or may I say defined lines? Every panel seems to fit just right. The bottom line: it rides pretty swell and sturdy through New York City’s mine fields.

The interior, particularly the inner door panels with their swooping armrest and recessed handles complement the interior color of the light grey vs dark black on this puppy. The dash along with the rest of the creature feature seats are inviting to say the least. The controls are right there, audio is super clear and potent, whereas road noise is nothing short of non-existent. One little fine touch to a common blind spot on today’s gargantuan A-pillars is the tiny triangular window. This window helps you peek beyond the pillars on either side of the vehicle when turning, especially when giving the right of way to pedestrians, and you will give a nod of cool to its designers. Though not a power hungry jockey, its Hybrid heart predictively gives pretty exceptional gas mileage in this struggling climate as we know it. Thumbs up and breakout the check book to claim this pup and be the first.

It’s no secret that though times are tough with bailout woes and massive layoffs, we ride for Cadillac.

Paul Wall has been doing so for some time and his modest fleet is impressive : 2008 Cadillac Escalade, 2008 Cadillac DTS, 1976 Cadillace Eldorado convertible, 1991 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. And currently in restoration mode: 1977 Cadillac Eldorado, 1971 Cadillac Eldorado convertible. Who do you ride for? Holla!
